(cross-posted with Google LatLong Blog)Google Maps for mobile has long allowed you to add stars on a map to mark your favorite places. You may have noticed a few months ago that Google Maps for desktop browsers introduced the ability to star places as well. Unfortunately, there was no way to keep these starred places in sync with Google Maps on your phone. With today's release of Google Maps for mobile 3.3 on Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, you'll now be able to keep the starred places on your phone and on your computer completely synchronized. It's like magic, but magic that you can use. Let me show you how:My colleague Andy is at his desk right now, and he wants to check out some comedy in London tonight. Google Maps lists the 4th result as Upstairs at the Ritzy -- it sounds like a great spot: cheap, fun and comfortable. With one click, Andy stars the item and he's done. When he walks out of the office and turns on Google Maps on his Nokia phone, Upstairs at the Ritzy will be the top place in his list of Starred Items, and it will show up as a star on his map. From there he can call the theater, get walking directions, or even SMS the address to a friend.Starring on Google Maps for desktop computers and Google Maps for mobileStarring places also works great when you're out on the town and you find cool spots using your phone. I was in Paris with my wife recently. We visited the obvious tourist spots like la tour Eiffel and le Musée du Louvre, but we also found a few interesting places we hadn't expected. While wandering the streets of Paris, we stumbled upon a cafe...the sort of place you'll remember forever, but immediately forget the name. I started Google Maps on my Nokia phone, searched for the name of the cafe (Les Philosophes) and starred it, knowing that when I come back to Google Maps on my computer at home, it will be starred, right there, on my map. How cool is it to create a trail of interesting places from your phone?!For users upgrading from an older version of Google Maps for mobile, you'll be asked, when you log in, whether you'd like to synchronize your existing starred items with your Google Account. This means you can preserve all the work you've put into customizing your map on your mobile, and have it show up, conveniently, in Google Maps in your desktop browser. To enjoy the benefits of all this mobile synchronization goodness, download Google Maps for mobile for your Symbian or Windows Mobile phone by visiting m.google.com/maps in your mobile browser. And don't worry, we're busy building this same functionality into our other mobile versions of Google Maps -- so sit tight.Posted by Flavio Lerda and Andy McEwan, Software Engineers
The addresses of the stars get synced, which is great, but the aliases of the stars do not.Example: My home, address is 123 Main Street (obviously an example), I've starred the location and renamed the star to "Home". When I then go to maps.google.com and view my stared locations it does not show "Home" as the star's name, instead it shows "123 Main Street".Can you please fix that in 3.3.1 :-)Thanks, LOVE the product, use it multiple times a day.
Google,Great work, love the potential of syncing across the mobile/desktop divide, but the loss of shared favourites with the nokia landmarks has me running back to the older version. The ability to find on google maps a location and nokia maps to take me to it is to great. But a great update non the less - cant upgrade and lose that feature thoughJon (Nokia e71 and 5800)
Does any one knows when Google map on e72 is going to support compass. And is any one else noticing that starred items are no longer visible in landmarks on e72. It used to be good option on my old e51 that i can search places using google map and save as favorite and later navigate using Nokia maps.
The Web site wego.here.com (formerly here.com) evolved out of the maps.ovi.com and then maps.nokia.com site and provides the web companion to the HERE suite. It works on all major browsers. Users can organize their favorite places on collections and sync to mobile devices. The Web application also uses WebGL to offer 3D map views without a plugin. With 3D goggles, users can get stereoscopic views of 25 cities. It also provides detailed street-level imaging for many cities.[20] As of 2013, the Web site offers routing support between many waypoints, city pages of over fifty popular cities showing local time and weather conditions, along with information from Lonely Planet and suggested places, 3D maps of 25 cities, with routing support.[21][22] It also offers live traffic flow visualization, public transport search, and synchronization of user's points of interest (Collections) between the Web site and mobile device. Additionally, it shows heat maps to visualize areas popular for food, nightlife, shopping and local sights in select cities, listing and managing businesses.[23]
HERE WeGo can download maps of countries and regions to internal storage so that a data connection is not needed for navigation. Online usage provides live traffic data and additional venue information.[40]
Maps for S40 were limited compared to other platforms. The maps were streamed online into the device or pre-downloaded with Nokia Suite. In some markets the phones were sold with an SD card preloaded with local maps. The system did not support turn-by-turn navigation. Asha series phones did not have GPS receivers; positioning was done by Cell ID of the cellular network or by using the Wi-Fi positioning system.
Volker, I have a few maps already on my phone, as they can be still useful sometimes even without turn by turn navigation and since I was waiting for this to happen. And what's so bad about a 5MB download? I'm on wifi with my phone, so the sheer volume of the download is not an issue.
Unfortunately I had a lot of unexplainable roaming charges on my recent trip to Italy with this version even though I had downloaded all maps, turned off AGPS and WLAN positioning and set map mode to offline. My phones packet counter never registered anything. Might have to be chalked up to beta status, though.
Volker thanks, yep I wanted to do just that, however the nokia pages gave me quite a run-arround:Searching for ways to buy the license I always ended up on -and-apps/ovi-maps/ovi-maps-main and the instructions to get the newest version of Ovi Maps...fair enough but...
Google is your friend and let me find this other thread which points to -client/nokia_maps_3.01_09wk44_b01_s60_3.2_lm_rom.SIS... Poking arround a little let me conclude that the server seems to be some static cache for nokia since it is a) mentioned in all the maps without maploader directions out there and b) redirects to the official site.SHA1 hash of the file working for me is 5425511C85B62D45D30DD8E63FE7C12321244CABthe broken one has 232C4F40AC2118E21A8B60E64E314FA4939B34A2

Upon installation of Nokia Maps 3.03 (default seems to be the older 2.0 version on the E71, which is auto-upgraded after first boot) the old maps which where preinstalled are deleted (as it should be). Unfortunately no new maps data is downloaded automatically, but the navigation utilizes on-demand online download of map data. 2ff7e9595c
